Are There Roads Missing on Your Map?
Every year 18% of roads on maps need updating and more than 230,000 points of interest may be added to a database.
Up-To-Date Maps Mean:
- Citizens can drive with confidence even in unfamiliar areas.
- Overall faster and smoother uber, lyft, and taxi rides. Up-to-date mobile maps ensure that you are matched with the closest available driver, directed on the fastest route, and given accurate ETAs.
- Drivers cut down on miles driven and save time and fuel by always knowing the most efficient path from point A to point B.
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is the “Wikipedia of Maps” run almost entirely on volunteer labor. Thanks to its dedicated community of contributors, OSM maps are more up-to-date and detailed than any competitor.
Frequently-Used Services That Trust OpenStreetMap:
Why Updated OSM Maps Matter to RoadBotics
When you send your map to RoadBotics, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes before you receive your mileage quote. As soon as the map is in our hands, our Cartography team gets to work on verifying, measuring, and checking the quality of the map provided. All of this is done using a base map layer, called OpenStreetMap (OSM).
In most instances, each map we receive needs a bit of updating on the base map to provide the most up to date information for our customers. The cartography team takes each customer provided map and gets to work on editing OpenStreetMap, regardless of whether your contract is signed or not. This is our way of benefitting your community from the very start of contact.
A lot of our customers are unfamiliar with OpenStreetMap, so let’s go through some of our more frequently asked questions:
RoadBotics uses Open Street Maps for a number of reasons. First, it is free to use and edit. Places like Google Maps and Esri licensing can be an exorbitant amount of money just to use their map layers, there is also a long convoluted editing process that is mainly done in-house. OSM allows us to update their maps as quickly as we are receiving them from our customers!
How accurate is OpenStreetMap?
Open Street Maps is like the Wikipedia of maps. Although the accuracy cannot be guaranteed, when you provide RoadBotics with the map of your area, we are updating OSM using your verified data. This leads to more and more accurate maps. We remove roads that no longer exist, move streets that are not reflective of their real location, and add new neighborhoods/streets that have been added to your local area.
Is RoadBotics the only company that uses OpenStreetMap?
RoadBotics is far from alone in the use of OpenStreetMaps. Companies that local governments or their constituents use everyday are also using OSM! Companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Uber, Craigslist, Foursquare, Strava, and so many more use OSM for their internal or customer-facing base maps. When RoadBotics updates your maps on OSM, we are updating your area for all of these companies’ maps!
